Telephone line quality?
  • PaulPaul April 2010
Following on from the "Broadband Speeds" thread.

What is the quality of your phone line like?

    Ours is absolutely terrible. :(
  • CraigCraig April 2010
Are one seems to be fine, not much bother lately.
  • PaulPaul April 2010
Our ADSL seems really good, but when we attach an ADSL microfilter it introduces so much line noise to the phone (it's a very odd problem) we actually can't use the phones it's that bad.

No microfilter and all is fine and dandy.

I'm going to have to call O2, then probably BT.
  • CraigCraig April 2010
You might want to try different filters then as sometimes they do introduce noise if they are not well made.
Have spares if you want to try.
  • PaulPaul April 2010
    Don't go there. ;)

I've got six here, including two I bought new. Been banging my head against a wall and confusing the helpful people over on the thinkbroadband forums for a while now!

    Hi Paul

Did you get your phone issue resolved ? We have the same problem.

    Nika
  • PaulPaul November 2011
I'm afraid not, I'm using the mobile around the house, which in itself is less than ideal.

If you get yours sorted do let me know the approach you took, as it's one of things I keep meaning to deal with, but not sure who to start with (BT or ADSL provider).  I'm sure it's a BT issue, but been warned they will deny it due to ADSL splitters being involved to create the issue.

we have the same problem, we also get no mobile signal unless on top floor or hanging out of windows
  • NikaNika December 2011
We had a sky engineer examine our ADSL line and Phone lines last week and he informed us there is lot of noise in the phone lines are that is a common problem in these houses. I am not sure what we can do about that. Any heard of that before ?

  • PaulPaul December 2011
I think that's a different issue. The phone line itself was noisy (nothing to do with this ADSL splitter issue) and that's due to poor wiring of the extensions. Essentially all the extension wiring does is act as a massive arial to pick up interference. We found that cutting out all the extensions from the main socket stopped the noisy line.

This didn't fix the other/main problem though.

    Nika, and anyone else.

BT engineer was here today for about three hours.  He tested our line, he tested things at the cabinet (on the corner of Milland Way by the three) and then he went to the exchange (Shenley Church End exchange, which he was grateful I told him was in Emerson Valley) and tested things there. Then came back to the cabinet. Then the house.  In this freezing weather I felt for him!

Anyway, turns out it's a problem that will/should affect more than just our house. He said that the quality was poor at the cabinet, slightly worse at our house, and OK at the exchange. The further you get from the exchange, the quality just degrades badly.

So, it's faulty gear at the exchange.

He's registered this with the powers that BT and the engineering team at the exchange (I think) and he says it will hopefully be fixed by the people at the exchange today.

If, like us, your line has been up and down and on and off, that will be why.

Will keep you all posted if/when I hear more. Hopefully it will be good news!

Cool! Working from home today, so at least I'll know why, if my connections goes up and down like the proverbial wh--es drawers :)

  • PaulPaul February 8
Well, this is still ongoing. Not much achieved today so far it would seem, although we do apparently now have all new broadband equipment somewhere down the line courtesy of BT.

Phone line call quality not improve though. Grr.
  • PaulPaul February 9
BT are still on this and will, apparently, be working at the exchange (and perhaps elsewhere) again today. If you're on the same bit of cable and equipment as us I guess you can expect another disruptive day.
  • PaulPaul February 10
    OK. Result!

They change out the card/pair (?) at the exchange, the ADSL equipment, did some other work, moved things about. And finally we have a quality phone line!!

Hopefully if your line isn't great, this will help a great deal, because apparently there's no way it would just be our house affected by this.

    Finally!!

    Paul
