New LED lights for the bathroom.
  • PaulPaul January 27
For those of us with CFL low energy bulbs in every room, there is a slight downside.

Night-time toilet trips. Particularly if you have a little boy (yes, I'm blaming my Son ENTIRELY).  Anyway, enough of the unsightly details. I recently bought some LED lights online, and they arrived today.

WOW is all I can say. Amazing improvement in lighting. Bright, powerful, instant-on, low-power. No downside at all (save for the cost!!).

I bought mine from LED Hut, excellent service, seemed like the best price, CE marked etc: http://www.ledhut.co.uk/gu10-smd-led-spotlight-5050-320-lumens-50watt-equiv.html

    Highly recommended.

They really are some ugly looking bulbs aren't they. Did you go for the warm or cool white options? I have just received one of each in the MR16 50w equivalent version to test out, and the yellow led tabs do stand out. I'm yet to try them in situ but think they will attract bees in the summer, thinking they are flowers when not turned on.

Do the 60w equivalent ones you have linked to not protrude from the light fitting?

The bulb ends are not pretty, I wouldn't use this type in the hallways etc, but in the bathroom they're recessed and behind glass, you don't really see unless you look (erm, you know what I mean!).  I want LEDs in all halls and bathrooms now, as and when the CFLs all die, which sometimes feels like it wont be long at all!

If you look up at them, you see the yellow bits, if you look at them from the door (for example), you don't see them. When they're on if you look at them, you go blind!

Well I'm happy to report the MR16 LED bulbs are good, I recommend the warm white version as the cool white gives a bit of a blue hue to it. I got the 50w equivalent version and it's quite a bit dimmer than a 50w halogen, probably closer to a 35w, so might be worth trying the 60w equivalent version if you love the amount of light the halogens give. I will be ordering more to replace all the bathroom/ utility room lights.

Anyone interested in the GU10 bulbs I have been sent a 5% off code from LED hut (Paul's link) doesn't say I can't pass it on so - Enjoy a further 5% OFF all GU10 LED bulbs when you use code GU5 .

Where do you have MR16 fittings? I swear they made these houses up as they went along. I know we have different configs in terms of bulb material to our near neighbours, didn't realise they had used different fittings too!

MR16's throughout most of the house, Kitchen/Living room, hall, landing and bathrooms, then GU10 fittings in the bedrooms and under stairs cupboard. Not sure why the mix of fittings in the one small house.

Just add it to the list of oddities we all have! :D
